Is Juicing Better For Chattanooga TN Kids?

Is Juicing Better For Chattanooga TN Kids?

Chattanooga TN health trends come and go and I have recently noticed that the practice of juicing fruits and vegetables has made its way back into the Georgia children’s nutrition spotlight.

In my experience, I have found that the only Chattanooga TN parents who have been successful at making their own super-healthy juices over the long term are Chattanooga TN vegetarians who dedicate a lot of daily time to preparing their food.

Most Chattanooga TN people who buy an expensive juicer use it for a few weeks before it is relegated to the back shelf of the pantry. Though juicing provides a way to improve your children’s nutrition, it can be time-consuming and expensive. After buying fresh fruits and vegetables, it can cost several dollars to make one glass. Of course, if you have ever tasted fruit and vegetable juices made fresh, you know how delicious they are. For many Chattanooga TN parents, this is worth every minute and every dollar spent.

Does juicing provide more nutrition than eating whole fruits and vegetables?

I haven’t come across any convincing evidence of this but I do see the value for Chattanooga TN parents whose kids enjoy drinking juice more than eating whole fruits and vegetable. Mixing vegetables with sweet fruits in a juice can disguise their taste and make them more palatable than the same vegetables raw or cooked.

Chattanooga TN parents who would like to start juicing should keep in mind the fact that juicing usually removes all the fiber from the fruits and veggies used. A glass of fresh juice also contains a lot of calories!

How Healthy Is Your Chattanooga TN Community?

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

How Healthy Is Your Chattanooga TN Community? Hello Chattanooga TN residents! Welcome to my children’s health blog, Chattanooga TN edition. I came across an interesting article in Children’s Health Magazine that got me thinking about children’s health factors in Chattanooga TN.

Have you considered how your Georgia community influences your child’s health? In a recent study, independent experts compiled statistics on more than 30 factors that are important to a child’s development including: crime and safety, education, economics, housing, education, cultural attractions, and health.1

Burlington, Vermont came out on top, receiving high marks in all areas of study. Burlington has the fewest fast food restaurants per capita and experts believe this is linked to the low rate of obesity. Clearly, the rate of obesity in Ringgold GA and Fort Oglethorpe GA is partially due to the ready availability of Big Macs and Whoppers.

While moving to Burlington isn’t necessary for your Chattanooga TN child to thrive, ask yourself how your own Georgia neighborhood ranks. If you think it could improve, attend Chattanooga TN city meetings or make changes within your own home.

You could encourage more participation in sports, start a crime-preventing Chattanooga TN neighborhood watch group, cook as a family, or seek out Ringgold GA museums and Ringgold cultural events. Whatever you choose, your children will reap the health benefits of your efforts.

If you want to improve your Chattanooga TN child’s nutrition, contact me today to learn about a nutritional supplement packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

Ringgold Kids and Bug Bite Dangers

Tuesday, January 24th, 2012

Ringgold Kids and Bug Bite Dangers Healthy Ringgold kids love to play outdoors, but Georgia parents need to be aware of a potential danger: bug bites. The ability to tell a harmful bug bite from a benign one is essential to keeping your active Ringgold child safe.

Flea bites are common in Ringgold GA, Fort Oglethorpe GA, and Dalton GA. They appear as a rash on a child’s skin with individual raised spots that might have a puncture in the center. Ringgold children will usually complain of itchy skin if they have been bitten by fleas.

Bee and wasp stings, also common in the Chattanooga TN area, can be differentiated by the number of stings. Bees only sting once, lose their stinger and then die, whereas wasps (as well as hornets and yellow jackets) can sting multiple times. Georgia homes often harbor wasp nests under the eaves.

The sting of a fire ant will usually cause Chattanooga TN kids to have a red hive that may develop into a itchy, pus-filled lesion. Chiggers, which are tiny arachnids, cause multiple itchy red welts on kids’ skin. Check your local Ringgold drugstore for itch-relief products and watch the welts for signs of infection.

Ticks bites will cause an uncomfortable redness on your Chattanooga TN child’s skin and may even swell. Since ticks can carry harmful diseases, you should contact your Ringgold area pediatrician if you child has had a tick bite.

Keep Kids Hydrated In Ringgold

Keep Kids Hydrated In Ringgold

Children, with their smaller body weights and higher turnover of electrolytes and water, are very susceptible to dehydration. Most Ringgold parents know to look for the signs of dehydration when their children have a stomach sickness, but even healthy kids are at risk for dehydration, especially when they are outside on warm, sunny days. The risk is particularly high for kids who play outdoor sports in Ringgold GA, Fort Oglethorpe GA, and Dalton GA.

Since dehydration is such an important issue in children’s health, be sure to insist on regular fluid intake before and during all physical activity. Opt for lightweight, loose, and light-colored clothing that covers as much skin as possible. Also, stay in close communication with coaches and make sure they are aware of dehydration risk.

Children who don’t exercise much, are obese, or who are sick, have an increased risk of dehydration. It’s important to allow all kids to acclimate to the heat when the temperature goes up in Ringgold. Let them take it easy for the first few practice sessions.

It’s also important to help your kids recognize the symptoms of dehydration:

Thirst
Dry mouth
Headache
Dizziness
Cramps
Excessive fatigue

New Crib Guidelines For Chattanooga TN Parents

Thursday, December 29th, 2011

New Crib Guidelines For Chattanooga TN Parents

First time Chattanooga TN parents have many issues to deal with as they prepare for the arrival of their little one, but nothing is more important than crib safety. The federal government has issued new guidelines for crib manufacturers.

As of June 28, 2011, all cribs manufactured and sold in Chattanooga TN and nationally must meet the new standards. The guidelines also apply to used cribs that are resold. Deadly drop-side rail cribs are now prohibited. The new rules also affect crib slat strength, mattress supports, hardware and the amount of testing required.

The new crib guidelines can be found at:

Prevent Classroom Sickness In Ringgold GA

Prevent Classroom Sickness In Ringgold GA

To curb the spread of viruses, lice, and other kid’s health threats in Ringgold GA schools, parents need to teach their kids proper hygiene practices and review them on a regular basis.

Here is a rundown of some unwelcome classroom visitors and steps to combat them:

  • Head lice: wash hands frequently, don’t share combs, hats, scarves.
  • Ringworm (skin infection with circular lesions, not actually caused by worms): keep sores covered, don’t share combs or clothing.
  • Pinkeye: vigilant hand washing can help stop the spread. Ringgold GA parents should keep kids home if their eyes are pink or draining fluid.
  • Colds, flu, strep: anti-bacterial wipes and no-rinse hand sanitizer can supplement soap and water scrubbing. Remind kids not to share drinks, snacks, lotion, chap stick, and lip gloss.

Ringgold GA children who know and practice these safeguards will be prepared when the next H1N1 threat visits Chattanooga TN.

Rethinking Chattanooga TN Schools

Wednesday, December 7th, 2011

Rethinking Chattanooga TN Schools Welcome to today’s Healthy Chattanooga TN Children blog. This site is dedicated to promoting children’s health in the Chattanooga TN area.

Unless you have been living in a cave for the last 20 years, you have heard about the obesity epidemic among U.S. children.

There are many worthwhile programs in the Chattanooga TN community that promote healthy eating habits and increased exercise for our youngest residents. I came across an interesting article last week that focused on how the design of schools can affect children’s health in general and obesity rates in particular.

‘Many schools were planned without thought given to how students can safely walk or ride their bikes to school. Playgrounds have been cut from budgets. An overemphasis on competitive sports has created a disproportionate amount of funding going to a select group of high profile sports, while minimizing the opportunities for the majority of students who desperately need exercise.’ Joel K. Sims, AIA, “Designing Schools To Fight Childhood Obesity,” School Designer, May 2007, http://www.schooldesigner.com/Articles/Designing-Schools-to-Fight-Childhood-Obesity-Part-1.asp, accessed on May 16, 2011

Here are some suggestions for making schools fitness-friendly:

  • Incorporate features of professional health clubs
  • Partner with community fitness centers to create multi-use facilities
  • Combine electronic entertainment and exercise
  • Incorporate movement into lesson plans

As we plan for new and renovated Chattanooga TN schools, let’s take our children’s fitness into consideration. As Chattanooga TN parents and educators, we can also promote lesson plans that incorporate movement. I also believe we need to look at how our tax dollars are spent. Do competitive sports programs in Georgia receive more than their fair share of available funds? Could we better use this money to provide exercise opportunities for all Chattanooga TN children?

I encourage you to raise awareness of these issues in your Georgia city. The only thing that will spur change is if parents, educators, and government leaders work together to lower the obesity rates in our Georgia communities.

Keep Your Chattanooga TN Kids Fit

Thursday, December 1st, 2011

Keep Your Chattanooga TN Kids Fit An important element in any Georgia child’s health is physical activity. Most young Ringgold children are busy exploring their world and don’t need any encouragement to run, skip, or jump. But spontaneous activities like these may decline during the tween years when most Ringgold GA children begin spending more time on indoor activities like TV watching, video game playing, and texting.

As Chattanooga TN parents we need to be more proactive during these years to make sure our kids are physically fit. Helping them choose a popular Chattanooga TN sport such as soccer, baseball, or skiing is an excellent way to encourage activity.

Provide active toys such as jump ropes, hula hoops, bikes, and roller blades and limit sedentary activities like movie watching.

Model the physically active behavior you want your Ringgold child to have. Take walks with your kids. Take advantage of Chattanooga TN recreational options. Go snow boarding, swimming, or hiking with them to show them that being active and fit is important to you.

Active Ringgold GA kids need healthy between-meal snacks such as dried fruit, nuts, string cheese, and protein bars. As a child’s health advocate in Georgia, I would love to share one of my favorite super-nutritious snacks with you. Please contact me today!

Dalton GA Kids Need A Healthy Plant-Based Diet

Dalton GA Kids Need A Healthy Plant-Based Diet

One of the best things you can do for your Dalton GA kids is to help them love plant foods. Kids who are exposed to a wide variety of live foods when they are young are more likely to continue eating them when they are grown.

Why are plant foods so important for Dalton GA families?

Plant-based foods have vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, fiber, and protein. Live foods are generally low-fat, low-sodium, and, if unprocessed, have less toxins than processed foods.

Let’s help our Dalton GA kids eat better than most of us Dalton GA adults have eaten for the past three generations.

There is more to a plant-based diet than broccoli and carrots. Here are some plant-based meal and snack ideas to inspire you:

  • Legumes: beans, peas, lentils (hummus, black bean burritos, vegetarian chile)
  • Nuts and seeds: pecans, almonds, walnuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, (sunflower seeds on salads, granola with almonds, trail mix with nuts instead of M&Ms)
  • Whole grains: barley, spelt, millet, rye, quinoa, brown rice (spelt bread, whole wheat pasta, stir-fry with brown rice)
  • Fresh and dried fruit: bananas, berries, citrus, melons (blueberry barley pancakes, fruit plate with yogurt-honey dip, dried apricots in brown bag lunches)
  • Veggies: (mashed sweet potatoes, spinach salad with raspberry vinaigrette, pizza with green pepper, mushrooms and onion instead of pepperoni)

One of my favorite foods is made from the super-nutritious cacao plant. It is high in antioxidants and taste like candy. To try Power Squares, contact me today.

Ringgold Parents: Is Your Child’s Car Seat Safe?

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

Ringgold Parents: Is Your Child's Car Seat Safe?

Anyone in Ringgold who transports kids in their car should regularly review the child safety seat regulations. Georgia and federal laws are periodically updated. Ringgold parents who think their six year-old doesn’t need to be in a booster seat may be surprised to learn that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends that children stay in a booster seat until their height and weight exceed the manufacturer’s limits.

Complete recommendations can be found at http://www.nhtsa.gov/Safety/CPS

Here are some quick facts for Ringgold parents:

  • Keep infants and toddlers rear-facing as long as possible.
  • Upgrade child safety seat when child reaches max height and weight for each particular model.
  • Most Georgia Wal-Mart, Target, and Babies-R-Us stores carry safety seats for all ages.
  • Ringgold children are ALWAYS safer in the back seat and those under twelve should never ride in the front seat.

I am Power Squares distributor David Privett. Thanks for visiting my Ringgold children’s health site. If you would like information about a terrific nutritional product available in Ringgold, call, text, or email me today.
